Joel Kaplan, President and CEO

Joel Kaplan has thirty–five years of experience in the computer and securities industries. Before co–founding 1010data, he was a Managing Director and Head of Research and Technology for all non–equity trading at Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) – North America. Prior to UBS, he was a Managing Director and head of Global Fixed Income Research and Technology at Morgan Stanley, where he had also led the Analytical Proprietary Trading Group (APTG). Under his direction, APTG pioneered the application of scientific methods and technology to uncover and exploit inefficiencies in the stock market. Due to the high degree of real time automation the group traded up to 2% of the New York Stock Exchange’s daily volume. Additionally, during his time with Morgan Stanley, Mr. Kaplan was responsible for the development of front office analytics systems, building on his 8 years prior at IBM, where he was involved in research, systems engineering, and marketing.

Sandy Steier, Vice President

Mr. Steier has twenty–five years of experience in the securities and technology sectors. Before co–founding 1010data, he managed the research and technology effort at Union Bank of Switzerland in support of several trading desks, where he succeeded in taking the firm to a leadership position in the use of advanced technology. Prior to UBS, Mr. Steier was a Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers, where he led the effort to migrate mortgage–backed securities analytical programming from mainframes to workstations, and a Vice President at Morgan Stanley, responsible for product development and analysis of fixed–income securities. While in the area of mortgage–backed securities at Morgan Stanley, he pioneered the research and development of many complex financial instruments and designed and implemented the software required to analyze them.
